My New Love Affair with Another Team Called "Spurs"

A Tottenham Hotspur Football Fan

In case you didn't know, Tottenham Hotspur is an English Premier League football club. Notice I said football not "soccer." That's a big issue with me, but that's for another time. I started getting into football around January of '06 when I started listening to a radio show via my iTunes called "World Soccer Daily." The radio show is hosted by a couple of English guys who talk about the English Premier League. The best football league in the world. Spain and Italy also have good football leagues but the English Premier League to me is the best. Again, a topic for another day.

So it all started with this, when one of the hosts recommended an ESPN article for newbie "soccer" fans who want to get into the game of football. This article by Bill Simmons explains how a newbie "soccer" fan picks a team. After reading it, I agreed completely with his logic. Then, I chose Tottenham Hotspur as MY football team. So what were my reasons for choosing?

1) I did not want to jump on the bandwagon and pick a clear-cut winner, so instead I picked a team that I could grow with. Plus, I think it's better to suffer first than to come out and pick whoever is winning. To me, that's jumping on the bandwagon. Spurs clearly showed that they were definitely not considered as Premiership royalty, but they did show a promise of awesome youth players so I figured they might be awesome in a few years time.

2) At first, I didn't like their kits or their "uniforms." But I knew that kits change almost every year now, so I kinda blew that off. And now, I'm completely fine with how they look.

3) So why didn't I chose another team? The other teams just seemed non-appealing to me. I didn't want a team that was gonna get relegated. Although, a team that got promoted like Reading appealed to me because they absolutley killed in the Championship League and they had an American leading their team. None of the other mid-table teams appealed to me either. Newcastle was the only other team that seemed interesting because of the love of football in that town by their die-hard fans. But I like my Spurs better.

So with those reasons, I picked a Tottenham Hotspur. A quality side I can grow with. Ever since August when I got extremely interested, I have broadened my knowledge about football. I follow them like I follow the San Antonio Spurs or Boston Red Sox. My third dedicated team.
